Stained Glass Garden Art Workshop

Create a garden art piece using the “Louis Comfort Tiffany” method.  Follow a pattern and learn how to cut and grind glass, use a soldering iron and apply black or copper patina. Finish the piece for hanging in your window or in your garden!

Herbaceous Plant Propagation: Making More Plants for your Garden

Saturday, March 12, 2011, 10 a.m. – Noon

Here’s your chance for an exclusive opportunity to be behind the scenes in the production greenhouses with Brian Kanotz, Callaway Gardens’ Greenhouse Production Manager.  You’ll be the envy of the neighborhood when you bring home enough plants to fill your summer garden with plants not found in your local garden center.  Learn the skills of the trade by sowing seeds and taking cuttings from the plants seen in the displays at Callaway Gardens.

Topiary Wreath

Saturday, April 9, 2011, 9:30 a.m. – Noon

Learn how to create a stuffed topiary with succulents that can be enjoyed in the garden or brought indoors for any number of special occasions year ‘round.  This versatile wreath can be changed out or added to for each season. It will be the pièce de résistance for your Mother’s Day, graduation or bridal celebration.

Spring Watercolor Workshop

Saturday – Sunday, April 9 – 10, 2011, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. each day

Paint nature in nature at Callaway Gardens.  The first day will focus on painting flowers from a close-up view. The second day will be in a garden setting to learn to paint flowers in a landscape scene. Class includes demonstrations, instruction, critique and individual coaching.  All skill levels of painters welcome.

Pine Needle Basket

April 16, 2011, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Learn how to use pine needles to make a basket using coil basketry techniques.  This beginner class covers the basic skills needed to make the basket.  Create a basket reflecting your own taste and design.  Bring a lunch or purchase lunch from the Discovery Café.

Good Bugs & The Plants They Love

Saturday, May 14, 2011, 10 a.m. – Noon

Did you know you can attract beneficial insects to your yard?  Let natural enemies do the work of managing pest insects.  We’ll make a container garden with a few of their favorite pollen plants and help you learn to identify these garden helpers.

Explore The Preserve at Callaway Gardens, our undeveloped land accessible to visitors only on guided programs, and learn more about natural history.  Hikes featuring a variety of topics, terrain and amount of time spent on the trails.  Appropriate footwear is required as trails are not paved and can be rocky and steep in some sections.  Pack a light lunch or snack and plenty of water for the trail.

President’s Day – Creek to Ridge

Monday, February 21, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

The Winter woods may seem brown and lifeless but nothing could be further from the truth.  Come look for some green on a Winter hike.  Explore the Cason J. Callaway Memorial Forest, from a clear spring-fed creek to the upland hardwood forest on top of Pine Mountain.  Along the way we’ll search for plants and animals that not only survive the hostile winter conditions, but thrive in them.  Wear sturdy hiking boots and pack a light lunch and plenty of water for the trail.

Length: 4.5 miles; moderately strenuous; ages 12 and up

Spring Wildflower Walk in the Preserve

Saturday, April 2, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Join this Callaway Gardens volunteer naturalist-led trek through the Callaway Gardens Preserve inside the Preserve in search of early spring wildflowers.  We’ll look for trilliums, Atamasco lilies, and other signs that Winter is finally gone! Wear sturdy hiking boots and pack a light lunch and plenty of water for the trail.

Length:  2-3 miles; easy to moderate; ages 12 and up

25th Annual Southern Gardening Symposium at Callaway Gardens

Callaway Gardens Plant Fair and Sale

March 24 – 27, 2011

The Annual Plant Fair and Sale scheduled for March 24 – 27, 2011, features approximately 19 vendors from our area and surrounding states selling a wide variety of plants and unique garden items.  This offers exceptional shopping under one roof.  The Annual Plant Fair and Sale is one of the largest fundraising events hosted by Callaway Gardens with proceeds going to the Ida Cason Callaway Foundation in order to support the Gardens and its educational and environmental programming.  The Plant Fair hours are:

Callaway Gardening School with Erica Glasener

March 24 & 25, 2011

Launch your spring gardening endeavors with advice from the experts.  Join horticulturist, author, and design expert Erica Glasener for an informative and enjoyable learning experience.  On Thursday, March 24th you have an opportunity for a special day-long Landscape Design Workshop. At the close of the workshop you can be one of the early-birds at the Callaway Gardens Annual Plant Fair and Sale to get first look at some of the choice offerings.

On Friday, March 25th Glasener will begin the day with an inspiring garden lecture.  Following that there will be an extensive Question & Answer Session with Glasener, who will be joined by experts from Callaway Gardens and the on-site plant vendors.  Space is limited so sign up early.  Bring your gardening questions and challenges to see if you can get your perplexing gardening issues solved!

Erica Glasener has hosted “A Gardener’s Diary” on Home and Garden Television (HGTV) for fourteen years and has written a biweekly column on plants and garden design for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.  She is the co-author with Walter Reeves of The Georgia Gardener’s Guide (revised edition published in 2004) and Month-By-Month Gardening in Georgia (revised edition published in 2006).  Her current project is a new book, Proven Plants for Your Southern Garden.  Glasener has also served as a contributing editor for Fine Gardening, a Taunton Press publication, and her articles have appeared in New York Times, The Farmer’s Almanac and Atlanta Magazine.
