Japanese Earthquake – Tsunami Benefit Concert

Symphony Orchestra Augusta and the American Red Cross – Augusta Chapter are partnering together to raise monetary donations to help survivors of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami. Maestro Shizuo Z Kuwahara and musicians of Symphony Orchestra Augusta will present a benefit concert on Sunday, March 27, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. at Covenant Presbyterian Church located on Walton Way Extension. The concert will also feature possible collaborations with Fort Gordon 434th Army Band and Wycliffe Gordon, to be confirmed.

 

Augusta Symphony Logo“This catastrophic event has had devastating effects on hundreds of thousands of Japanese lives and will take many years to rebuild the country. We hope this benefit concert will help the relief efforts of this tragic earthquake and tsunami in Japan,” Maestro Shizuo Z Kuwahara, Music Director of Symphony Orchestra Augusta.

Red Cross representatives will be present to collect donations for survivors of the Japanese Earthquake at all SOA future March concerts including Pops! at the Bell, Friday, March 18, featuring Riders in the Sky; Classic Series presented by Aiken Symphony Guild: SOA presents Mahler’s Titan on Friday, March 25th at Etherredge Center at USC-Aiken; Symphony Series, Mahler’s Titan at First Baptist of Augusta on Saturday, March 26th , and the Benefit Concert on Sunday, March 27th.

 

On Friday, March 11, 2011 an 8.9 magnitude quake hit north east of Japan causing over ten thousand of deaths, fires, and 33 feet tsunami waves along the Japan’s coastline – sweeping away homes, cars, and anything in the tsunami’s path. While earthquakes are not uncommon is Japan, one of this magnitude, was not expected nor prepared for.

 

The benefit concert is open and free to the public. In place of ticket admission, the American Red Cross will be present to accept monetary donations. 100% of the donations collected at both the benefit and Symphony concerts will go directly to the American Red Cross – Augusta Chapter for the Japanese earthquake & tsunami relief fund.
