Take Five…SOA Live!

Symphony Orchestra Augusta Musicians to Perform

in McDuffie County Elementary Schools

Made possible by the Emily Stevens Baumann Education Endowment Fund

Beginning Thursday, April 1, 2010, a mixed ensemble of five core musicians from Symphony Orchestra Augusta present Take Five…SOA Live! for students in all McDuffie County Elementary Schools.  This new program takes David Gee, cello, Eliza Hesse, principal second violin, Taylor Massey, principal clarinet, Kelly Odell, principal oboe, and Carl Purdy, principal viola into the schools to perform the music of Bach, Bizet, and Brubeck, among others.  SOA Music Director Shizuo Z Kuwahara selected orchestral music which would be engaging for young audiences and created arrangements especially for this mixed ensemble of five musicians.  Although the music was also selected to illustrate specific concepts which will be discussed, the focus is the music.  A question and answer session follows each performance, extending the personal connection with the musicians.  These presentations are intended to expose students to the sight and sound of orchestral instruments in a live performance .

The McDuffie County “Music in the Schools” program is made possible through the Emily Stevens Baumann Education Endowment Fund. In its fifth year, the McDuffie County initiative has been expanded to provide this opportunity for enrichment to the younger students at Thomson and Maxwell.  Ms. Baumann recently commented: “As a retired music therapist, senior citizen at Brandon Wilde, and member of the SOA Board of Directors, I treasure the value of music in wellness and quality of life for everyone.  It is a privilege to be a part of expanding musical enrichment for the students of McDuffie County.”

The Augusta Symphony’s scope of educational and outreach services covers a 15-county area and two states.  The Symphony annually presents 150 annual lecture-demonstrations for elementary school students in area school districts including Columbia and Richmond Counties in Georgia and Aiken County, SC.
