Take Five…SOA Live!

Symphony Orchestra Augusta Musicians

performing in Columbia, Richmond, Aiken, & McDuffie County Elementary Schools

SOA Executive Director Sandra Self announced today the completion of the Symphony’s “Music in Schools” programs in the CSRA for the 2009-2010 season. Thirty-two programs were presented for 4th and 5th graders at 16 Columbia County Public Schools in January & February, using resources allocated by the individual schools.  From February 24 through May 7, 2010, the mixed ensemble of five core musicians from Symphony Orchestra Augusta presents Take Five…SOA Live! for students in Richmond, Aiken, and McDuffie Counties.  This program takes David Gee, cello, Eliza Hesse, principal second violin, Taylor Massey, principal clarinet, Kelly Odell, principal oboe, and Carl Purdy, principal viola, into the schools to perform together and in various combinations the music of Bach, Bizet, and Brubeck, among others, for elementary audiences.  SOA Music Director Shizuo Z Kuwahara selected music that is accessible to everyone and created arrangements of the orchestral works especially for this ensemble.  The result is a program which allows students to hear various colors of instruments and a suggestion of the orchestral sound.  For many students this up close performance by professional musicians provides an invaluable first exposure to orchestral instruments in a live performance.

In Aiken County, the Murphy M. Holloway, Jr. Symphony in the Schools Program is presented by the Aiken Symphony Guild and sponsored by the Murphy M. Holloway, Jr. Foundation.  This year eighteen elementary schools will host performances for their students.  The Richmond County Board of Education brings Take Five…SOA Live! to the Arts Infusion programs at Warren Road  and Garrett Elementary Schools and to four other selected schools.  The Emily S. Baumann Education Endowment Fund makes possible performances in every McDuffie County Elementary School this year!

In addition to the above sponsors, all Symphony education & cultural engagement programs are made possible by the Charles W. and Patricia Moye Education Endowment Fund, The Creel-Harison Foundation, John Deere, The Knox Foundation, Macy’s Foundation, the Cleon W. Mauldin Foundation, the Patricia S. McGee Foundation, the Arthur H. and Ernest B. Merry Foundation, and the Wachovia Foundation.
