Charleston, S.C., Captures No. 3 Spot in Travel + Leisure Magazine’s World’s Best Poll
The Charleston area earned five nods from the World’s Best Awards, a ranking of the top hotels, destinations, airlines, cruises, outfitters and transportation companies as decided by the readers of Travel + Leisure magazine. The results are featured in the August issue and currently appear on travelandleisure.com.
Known for its mannerly people, multiple James Beard Foundation award-winning chefs, world-class golf and historic attractions, Charleston earns recognition as the third best city in the United States and Canada. In addition to the Best City ranking, four area properties receive mention in the accommodations categories.
- Woodlands Resort & Inn take the second spot on the Top 5 Inns in US/Canada (Fewer than 40 rooms) list.
- Planters Inn earns the 6th spot on the Top 10 Small City Hotels in US/Canada (Fewer than 100 rooms) list.
- Charleston Place makes a significant jump to number 12-from the 22nd spot last year-in the ranking of Top 50 Large City Hotels in US/Canada (100 rooms or more).
- The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Golf Resort lands at the 17th spot on the Top 50 Resorts in US/Canada list.
“It is an honor for our city to be held in such esteem by the savvy readers of Travel + Leisure,” says Helen Hill, executive director of the Charleston Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. “To have four hotels highlighted on the lists is a special thrill and a great reminder of the world class accommodations found throughout the Charleston area.”

Although Charleston may be ranked the 3rd best city by Travel & Leisure Magazine’s World’s Best Poll, the horse carriage industry gives the city a black eye. The horses and mules routinely pull 16-17 people through the hot streets of Charleston in temperatures up to 98 degrees, with a heat index of 110 or higher during the hottest days of June, July, and August. The animals suffer needlessly, and I would ask anyone contemplating a trip to Charleston to forgo a ride in a horse carriage.
The carriage horse industry is horrible beyond words. the horses are made to pull huge carriage loads of people in heat that would put most horses in the ground. Itis sad beyound words. I live in downtown Charleston and hate to even go near where the carriage horses are…it is so horrible to see them suffer in the intolerable heat. Every time I see a carriage horse struggling in above 98 degree heat and humidity my heart breaks.
