Gertrude HerbertThe Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art is delighted to announce the establishment of the Creel-Harison Community Art Gallery, located on the third floor of historic Ware’s Folly at 506 Telfair Street in downtown Augusta.  Ware’s Folly (c. 1818) is home to the Institute’s main gallery and administrative offices.  Renovated through the generous support of the Creel-Harison Foundation, this new gallery will serve as a dedicated exhibition space for local artists and will help to promote public awareness and appreciation of visual arts, a vital sector of the local arts community.

The Creel-Harison Community Art Gallery will be open to the Institute’s member artists living in the Central Savannah River Area, and will host five six-week solo exhibits annually, opening concurrently with Main Gallery exhibitions.  Applications from artists interested in displaying their work will be reviewed quarterly by the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art Exhibition Committee, and should include an exhibit proposal, artist statement, and high-quality images of current artwork.  Submission deadlines are September 1, December 1, March 1, and June 1.

The Institute is pleased to publically unveil the Creel-Harison Community Artists’ Gallery with The Mad Potter’s Tea Party, an exhibition featuring the works of Augusta ceramicist Shishir Chokshi.  The teapot and its companions are the source of inspiration for the exhibition, which attempts to engage the forms that surround tea and coffee service.  The teapot challenges the potter to achieve the balance between form and function.  In keeping with the exhibition’s title, vessels will undergo alterations to probe into their possibilities and take them out of the round in various degrees.  The aesthetics of this work draw upon a blend of Chokshi’s eastern heritage and western formal education, and are always tempered by the madness of fatherhood.  The exhibit will open in conjunction with the opening of Gertrude Herbert’s annual juried fine art competition, A Sense of Place 2009.
