Flat Rock Music FestivalThe 14th annual Flat Rock Music Festival is one of western North Carolina’s destination festivals for families, musicians and music lovers.  Hosted at Camp Ton-a-Wanda in Flat Rock, NC; the festival showcases emerging talent through the singer-songwriter contest as well as providing musical performances by bands and songwriters from all over the southeast and beyond.

Tickets are still available for the festival.  Participants can purchase them on-line until Sept. 23 . The Adult and Youth Weekend tickets are ”Buy One Get One Half Off” until then. OR participants will be able to purchase them at the front gate for full price.

Gates for the festival open at noon on Friday the 25.  Camping passes are included in each ticket purchase, as well as all the swimming and boating activities.  The festival is a rain-or-shine event, with many fun things for families to enjoy all weekend long.  I addition, there will be good times to had for the whole family at this year’s Kid’s Village.  The festival has strived to create many interactive projects and games for both Mom and Dad to enjoy with the kids!

Also included in the festival this year is a larger selection of Workshops for festival participants.  Each of the workshops is lead by professional musicians, music industry veterans or people associated with the performance arts to guide and give helpful tips to those wanting to delve deeper.  In addition, each year, hundred a couple hundred musicians and songwriters submit original songs to be judged in the Emerging Songwriters Contest.  Ten contestants are chosen and asked to perform at the festival.  One contender will be awarded a main stage slot for the 2010 Fall Festival for winning the Emerging Songwriting Contest.  Last year’s winner, Cort McCumber says, “I was very excited to be chosen for the songwriter contest, and once I showed up, I knew it was a festival I wanted to come back to.  All of the songwriters are great, and I was lucky enough to win.  Flat Rock is a great festival and I can’t wait to perform on the main stage!”

On Friday September 25, the music lineup begins at 4:00 p.m with the folk trio Now You See Them on the main stage.  Other musicians playing on Friday are: Hobex, Pale Young Gentleman, Claire Lynch and Michael Reno Harrell.  There are multiple venues, both in and outdoors throughout the campground, that allow attendees to see performances in all types of weather.

Saturday the 26th’s performers include the “just added” to the schedule - Belleville Outfit, Danielle Howle, Kort McCumber, Carrie Rodriguez and Jim Lauderdale.  IN addition,  the Saturday schedule includes jazz/funk steel drummer from Asheville, the Jonathan Scales Fourchestra.  At other venues, you can also enjoy seeing Sam Anderson,  The Dirty Rug Band and Rock Killough.

Back by popular demand, Sunday is Old Home Day with classic performances by The Smokey Joe Show, Anon Dixon Day,  Gove Scrivenor, MoonShine Babies and the Parkington Sisters.

“Each year provides an amazing lineup up performers and musicians who push the envelope of creativity and talent.  Their hard work and dedication is what creates the unique atmosphere at the Flat Rock Music Festival,” says festival director Kathlene Stith.  “We strive to bring the public acts that aren’t as mainstream, but provide an excellent musical experience that our festival has become so well known for.”
