11th Annual Tybee Island Polar Plunge
On January 1, 2011, thousands will take the plunge into the Atlantic Ocean on Tybee Island. The plunge will take place at 12noon next to the Walter Parker Pier and Pavilion on Tybee Island.
The Society of 40 men or 8 horses, a national veterans group, has been the lead sponsor of the Tybee Polar Plunge for the past four years. This event raises funds for the local unit’s nurse’s scholarship given out to nurse candidates from local universities. This is why the Tybee Island Polar Plunge saying is “Freezin for a Reason”.
This year will be the first year with registration into the Tybee Polar Club, Don Ernst says, the organizer for the past 10 years. There will be a graduated scale and everyone that registers and participates will be a shrimp graduating each year until you become Moby Dick in the tenth year. The Tybee Polar Plunge registration fee will help the organization offer major scholarships to support the local medical community. Groups are now encouraged to register to compete for the best Gang of Goofs. Groups will register their gang prior to 11am on January 1st and will parade their gang across the pier in the first annual parade of goofs! The winner of the Gang of Goofs competition will receive the coveted Le Goof’s trophy!
To register for the Tybee Island Polar Plunge visit www.TybeePolarPlunge.com. The registration fee is $25 and includes a collector’s edition Tybee Polar Plunge t-shirt. Thank you to all the sponsors of the 2011 Tybee Island Polar Plunge which include: Connect Savannah, Key to Savannah, Southern Eagle, South University, Tybee Island Tourism Council, WJCL/Fox 28, and WRHQ 105.3 FM.
