If you haven’t started thinking about your spring garden, now is the time to do it. Bulb planting season is just around the corner, and the horticulturists at Riverbanks have picked their favorites to offer at the annual Bulb Sale.

Family-friendly Halloween festivities return to Riverbanks this October with Boo at the Zoo. The annual spook-tacular will open on Friday, October 15, and run nightly October 15 – 17 and October 22 – 30.

Riverbanks Zoo and Garden will welcome Monique Coleman, star of Disney’s High School Musical franchise and “last woman standing” on Season 3 of Dancing with the Stars, for a public meet and greet on Sunday, September 19, beginning at 3:30pm.

During the summer of 2008, the University of South Carolina’s College of Hospitality, Retail and Sport Management conducted a comprehensive study to determine the annual financial contributions of Riverbanks Zoo and Garden on the economy of Richland and Lexington counties.
The report illustrates the economic impact of both tourism and operational spending associated with Riverbanks and proves that the Zoo and Garden is a powerful economic driver within the local economy. On Saturday, October 2, Riverbanks Zoo and Garden will host the wildest fundraiser in town. Riverbanks ZOOfari returns this year with captivating entertainment, animal presentations and even more fabulous food than before.

And baby makes nine…Riverbanks Zoo and Garden is now home to nine gentoo penguins after the birth of a chick earlier this summer. The young bird, currently nameless (his naming rights will be auctioned off at Riverbanks ZOOfari on October 2), was born at the Zoo on June 27 and is being cared for by his parents in a climate-controlled area, off exhibit.

Riverbanks Zoo and Garden is proud to announce the addition of two chicks to the flamingo flock. But don’t expect to see pink babies walking around just yet; it takes them a year to attain the notorious color.
