Radio Operators Communicate Through the Battleship’s Original Equipment

The Azalea Coast Amateur Radio Club will operate from the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA during the North Carolina QSO Party on Sunday, February 28, 2010. The event runs from Noon until 8:00PM local time. The purpose of this annual “HAM RADIO” event, sponsored by the Forsyth Amateur Radio Club, is to allow amateur radio operators worldwide to contact as many of North Carolina’s 100 counties as possible.

Call for Artists Downtown Hickory Art Crawl

The Downtown Hickory Art Crawl Series is looking for a limited number of artists to participate during the May 20, 2010 and September 16, 2010 Art Crawls.
The Art Crawls will be from 5:30 to 9:00 pm at various businesses and art galleries in Downtown Hickory. There is no fee involved for the artists. Artists may keep all of the monies made from any sales. Demonstrations are strongly encouraged. Mooresville High School Mock Trial Team Wins Regional Competition

Eight students from Mooresville High School competed in the North Carolina Advocates for Justice High School Mock Trial Competition on February 20 at the Mecklenburg County Courthouse in the Charlotte Regional Qualifier for the statewide competition. Senior Elise Hauser was named “Best Attorney” in Round 1 and “Best Witness” in the Final Round, while Senior Rebecca Sliney was named “Best Attorney” and both Round 2 and the Final Round.

The Carolina Sports Medicine Battleship NC Half Marathon & Bay Six Battleship 5K was a huge success. We had participants from 27 states with 1,227 in the Carolina Sports Medicine Half Marathon and 537 registered in the Bay Six 5K which were both records. We had 69 Walkers in the half marathon and are very proud of that fact.

Behind the Scenes at the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA

Saturday, March 13th, join us for a unique, behind-the-scenes tour of un-restored areas of the Battleship. The four-hour tour consists of small groups with guides. Guests explore the bow (officers’ country and boatswain locker), third deck (Radio II, brig, after gyro, storage rooms, ammunition handling, Engineer’s office, torpedo area), engine room #3, the cold storage compartments, and up inside the fire control tower to the top of the ship. The Azalea Coast Radio Club will be in Radio II to explain their work on the ship’s radio transmitters.

Swinging Under The Stars Named Best Special Event in NC

The North Carolina Main Street Center named Swinging Under The Stars—A Tribute to the Big Band Era as the Best Downtown Special Event during the NC Main Street Conference in New Bern.  Accepting the award from the NC Secretary of Commerce during the Annual Awards Dinner were Tracy Nestor, 2009 President of Hickory Downtown Development Association, and musician Rick Cline.
